Palo Alto Unified School District
Press Release, April 21, 1998

Superintendent Donald A. Phillips announces the appointment of Catherine Howard as principal of the new elementary school soon to open in the Barron Park neighborhood.

Ms. Howard earned her A.B. in History and Literature from Harvard University and her M.A. in Teaching, English, and Urban Education from Wesleyan University. She is currently finishing her M.A. in Educational Administration at Santa Clara University.

Ms. Howard's career in education includes:

  • 3 years teaching in a large urban high school in New Haven, Connecticut
  • 5 years lecturing in Human Development and Family Studies at Cornell University
  • 8 years teaching grades 1 through 5 at Ohlone Elementary School
Since 1994, Ms. Howard has served as the resource teacher for mathematics in our school district, overseeing staff development, curriculum implementation, and development of grade level standards in elementary mathematics. She has also led our work to develop and implement performance assessment in the 5th grade and has chaired the PAUSD Assessment Coordinating Council. She serves as a consultant and presenter for Marilyn Burns Education Associates, a leading professional development provider for mathematics teachers.

In addition to her excellent training and broad professional experience, Ms. Howard brings to her new assignment excellent communication stills, boundless energy, unfailing enthusiasm for creative ideas, and a deep knowledge of and commitment to the Palo Alto community. She will begin work immediately with Barbara Butterworth, interim principal for the school, to lead the preparations for the opening in September 1998, and will assume full time duties as principal at the end of this school year.
